Required Education & Qualifications for Working as a School-Based PT

To work as a school-based PT, you’ll need an undergraduate degree in physical therapy or a closely related field from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Along with that, you’ll need to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE®).

PTs Help Students Access Their Education

PTs perform a wide variety of tasks to ensure that students with physical challenges can achieve their goals. When necessary and available, this may include altering the physical environment, such as by using adaptive classroom seating or making changes to the playground. By developing and implementing strategic interventions, PTs can help students increase their range of movement, improve and/or restore physical function, and reduce or manage pain. PT interventions may focus on increasing, developing, or improving one or more of the following:

Posture

Stability

Mobility

Balance

Strength

Endurance

Coordination

Gross and fine motor control

In addition to designing and implementing interventions for specific students, PTs also work as a part of Individualized Education Plan (IEP) teams to help students move along a spectrum of services as their needs and capabilities change. This helps create capacity rather than dependency.

PTS Takes a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Approach to Related Services

At PTS, we apply a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Approach to school-based therapy and related services. This model matches students with the right level of support, including classroom-wide, small-group, and individual interventions. When implemented correctly, it helps all students access the support they need, while ensuring those who qualify for therapy end up on caseloads.

To facilitate these interventions and bring therapy into general education, PTs who engage with us often train teachers and support staff on how to address general student needs at the classroom level and better support students with physical disabilities.

PTS is more than your typical staffing agency. We don’t just place you in a school; we go with you. For recently certified PTs or those moving into their first school-based role, we offer an optional School-Based Academy every year. This can help new therapists feel more confident as they enter a school environment. Our independent contractors also have the opportunity to:
