Required Education & Qualifications for Working as a School-Based PT
To work as a school-based PT, you’ll need an undergraduate degree in physical therapy or a closely related field from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Along with that, you’ll need to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE®).
If you’re still in the process of completing your education and looking for fieldwork experience, speak with your university staff about opportunities with PTS. When you engage with us, you’ll receive access to the support you need to advance your PT career.

PTS Takes a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Approach to Related Services
At PTS, we apply a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Approach to school-based therapy and related services. This model matches students with the right level of support, including classroom-wide, small-group, and individual interventions. When implemented correctly, it helps all students access the support they need, while ensuring those who qualify for therapy end up on caseloads.
To facilitate these interventions and bring therapy into general education, PTs who engage with us often train teachers and support staff on how to address general student needs at the classroom level and better support students with physical disabilities.
We Provide Independent Contractors with Support and Flexibility
PTS is more than your typical staffing agency. We don’t just place you in a school; we go with you. For recently certified PTs or those moving into their first school-based role, we offer an optional School-Based Academy every year. This can help new therapists feel more confident as they enter a school environment. Our independent contractors also have the opportunity to:
- Choose part- or full-time hours as available and needed.
- Join our community Facebook page where therapists connect and share resources.
- Access and use our free resource library with therapist-designed interventions, evaluation materials, and more.
Additionally, PTS’s Clinical Directors are available to step in as needed to facilitate communication between therapy teams and school administrators.
