What Do School-Based RNs & LPNs Do?
By facilitating and promoting health and safety, school-based nurses support the growth and development of children and youth in general education as well as students with special needs. A few of the other things they often do throughout the day-to-day include leading health-related interventions as well as:
- Identifying intervention outcomes
- Following state and local regulations
- Performing health screenings and assessments
- Working one-on-one with students to carry out their care plan
- Developing plans, including Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs)
While working as an independent contractor nurse alongside PTS, you may also participate on teams, like the Committee on Special Education, a student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team, and/or a Section 504 Team.
What Will You Do as a School Nurse Engaging with PTS?
At PTS, we take a Whole-Child Approach to special education and related services. That means, as an RN or LPN, you’ll collaborate with other service providers, clinicians, teachers, and administrators to address the multi-faceted needs of your students.
You’ll also be part of the Integrated Systems of Support Model, which helps align interventions across all related services and facilitates cross-disciplinary training. This consultative model supports students who may be struggling in multiple areas as well as whole classrooms by providing the most comprehensive care possible.
What is it Like to Engage with PTS as an Independent Contractor?
For over 25 years, we’ve engaged with school-based service providers who like working alongside us as independent contractors, and it shows. Nearly half of all our incoming applicants have been referred to us by a current therapist. Accordingly, we have a robust referral program.
The independent contractors who work alongside us also have access to:
- Community Facebook group
- Support from PTS Clinical Directors
- Optional School-Based Academy orientation
- Clinician-developing resources and interventions
- Career advancement & networking opportunities throughout the year
When you join our network as an independent contractor, you will have the option to choose a part- or full-time schedule, which can enable you to choose the work-life balance that suits your needs best.
Along with that, you will find your own healthcare plan and may be able to write off more work-related deductions on your taxes, which can lead to greater take-home pay. PTS always recommends working with health insurance and tax professionals.
