What Does a School-Based OT Do?

As a school-based OT, you play a crucial role in students’ lives. From helping them develop fine motor skills to assisting them with executive functioning, self-regulation, and much more, you enable students to fully access their education. The Registered OTs who contract alongside us frequently:
  • Perform evaluations to assess students’ needs.
  • Provide one-on-one Occupational Therapy sessions.
  • Serve as part of Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams.
  • Lead classroom-wide interventions to address common OT concerns like handwriting.
If you are still completing your education, keep in mind that to work as a school-based OT, you must have a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, have passed the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination, and be licensed.

PTS’s MTSS Approach to School-Based Therapy & Related Services

At PTS, we take a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) approach to school-based therapy and related services. By matching each student with the right level of support and addressing common concerns at the classroom level, this approach reduces therapy referrals, keeps caseloads manageable, and improves the overall quality of treatment for students. When you contract alongside PTS as an OT, you will also regularly collaborate with service providers from other fields and backgrounds, so you can better support each student. To further improve the delivery of services, our Clinical Directors act as a bridge of communication between therapists like you, teachers, and school administrators.

The Benefits of Engaging With PTS as a School-Based OT

At PTS, we forge trusting, long-term relationships with our partnering school districts. This enables us to make therapy placements that are a good fit for everyone involved. In addition to making individualized placements for therapists and other service providers like you, the clinicians who engage with us have access to a community Facebook group to share resources, as well as:

  • Guidance from PTS’s Clinical Directors when needed.
  • Networking opportunities with fellow OTs and other service providers.
  • A free resource library full of therapist-designed, school-based interventions.
  • An optional, year-long School-Based Academy for new OTs offered every August.

Thanks to our supportive, collaborative, team-based culture, we are proud to say that nearly half of the incoming independent contractors who engage with us have been referred by other service providers—and we also have a robust Referral Bonus Program!
